"The strength of women comes from the fact that psychology cannot explain us. Men can be analysed, women ... merely adored."

florence neary, rnp, well-loved, experienced nurse practitioner joined our team this past summerFlorence Neary,
Registered Nurse Practitioner

Florence joined our team this summer!  She will be continuing her work seeing gynecology patients in Carmel, NY at a new address.

Her new location is just down the block: at our Carmel satellite office at “The Barns”: just prior to the entrance to Putnam Hospital Center, at 667 Stoneleigh Avenue, Carmel, New York.  She also joins us in caring for patients in our Yorktown office.

Florence has an easy warmth and nurturing spirit.  She is known for her gift in counseling her patients in preventative health.  She has a special interest in contraception and adolescent healthcare, having received her Nurse Practitioner training at Penn State, sponsored by Planned Parenthood

At the other end of the reproductive health spectrum, she is also very adept at helping patients manage postmenopausal breast and bone health, and has cutting-edge information on preventing fractures associated with aging.

Loyal patient following for many years. In addition to helping Dr. McGroary see his patients, Florence has developed a loyal patient following, who have been seeing her for their annual gynecology exam for many years.  If her patients have an abnormal mammogram or pap smear, she is very qualified to counsel patients as to the options for management as they develop.

She will refer patients with an abnormal pap smear to Dr. McGroary for colposcopy, (a “microscope” of the vagina and cervix, to rule out precancerous changes), and closer follow-up.  An experienced gynecologist, Dr.  McGroary will take the patient through the next step, and when the abnormality has resolved, she returns to Florence’s care.  A patient with an abnormal mammogram will be asked to come in to the office to discuss the possible etiologies and with shared decision-making.  Depending on what is found on mammogram and exam, she will be referred either for follow-up breast films, sonogram, or breast biopsy, to be done by the radiologist or a breast specialist.

“We decided she was powerful in nature.”

Not ready to retire.  A few years ago, Florence decided to balance her love of medicine and her family’s desire to move to warmer climates and relocated in South Carolina.  She missed her patients, and decided the best of both worlds would be to return to see patients one week per month, knowing that in her absence they will be cared for by trusted colleagues.  After working with Dr. McGroary for the past year in another physician’s office, she chose to follow Dennis as he changes his Carmel office to a new, more comfortable location.  We feel lucky to add such a warm, experienced, talented clinician to our team.

What is a Nurse Practitioner and practically speaking, what is the difference in an exam by a physician and one by a nurse practitioner?

Many patients choose NPs as their primary, acute and/or specialty healthcare provider. In addition to being top-notch healthcare providers, NPs deliver a unique blend of nursing and medical care. They provide comprehensive, personalized health education and counseling. NPs assist patients in making better lifestyle and health decisions.

NPs have distinguished themselves from other healthcare providers by focusing on the whole person when treating specific health problems and educating their patients on the effects those problems will have on them, their loved ones and their communities. By providing high-quality care and counseling, NPs can lower the cost of health care for patients. For example, patients who see NPs as their primary care provider often have fewer emergency room visits, shorter hospital stays and lower medication costs.  (edited from aanp.org.)
